GRAND RAPIDS — The Downtown Development Authority has agreed to spend $46,308 to make necessary repairs to the underground snowmelt system along Monroe Center between Monroe and Ottawa avenues.

Normally the Downtown Improvement District would pick up the maintenance tab for the faulty system, but it doesn’t have the funds.

Work could begin any day now as the system typically is shut down in the middle of March. The city has selected Geotech Inc. to do the work.

DDA members also allocated up to $31,350 for the preliminary designs of a new wayfinding system for the skywalk that runs from DeVos Place to Van Andel Arena and for the riverwalk along the Grand River. Corbin Design of Traverse City will do the design work. Corbin also designed the signs for the much larger wayfinding system that is in place throughout the downtown district.
