GRAND RAPIDS — The Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce has named Gazelle Sports, a specialty sports retailer, its 2008 Small Business of the Year. The company will be honored at the Chamber’s annual Small Business Celebration luncheon on May 20.

“Not only does Gazelle Sports provide a world-class retail experience for its customers, but the company gives continuous training and support for employees, has a high level of involvement with the greater community and stays true to its core mission of connecting people to a healthy life,” Jeanne Englehart, president of the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, said in a news release. “Gazelle is a great example of a business that was founded in and has grown in West Michigan, always giving back to the community it serves. And (Gazelle is) proving living their mission isn’t a bad way to run a business, ending 2007 with a record year in sales and profits.”

The company sponsors programs such Girls on the Run and presentations on healthy living and physical activity to area businesses through its “Gazelle Speaks” program.

“One of the best aspects of doing business in the Grand Rapids area is the opportunity for community partnerships,” said Ken Sung, co-owner of Gazelle Sports. “Over the years, we have built many valuable relationships that strengthen not only our business but our communities as a whole. This is what we feel ‘living the mission’ is all about — working together to promote good health, economic vitality and environmental sustainability in West Michigan.”

Gazelle Sports was chosen from a field of 10 nominees, all of which will be recognized

at the May 20 event. The judging panel was made up of Grand Rapids business leaders from both large and small companies in a variety of industries.

The Small Business Celebration is Tuesday, May 20, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Ambassador Ballroom of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. Cost is $50 for Chamber members, $75 for nonmembers. Register to attend at or by calling 771-0303.
