New orders, our closely watched index of business improvement, remained negative but came back to -28 from -57. The production index remained negative at -38, but also recovered modestly from last month's reading of -43. Activity in the purchasing offices, our index of purchases, follow the same pattern and edged up to -53 from -59. The index of employment remained almost unchanged at -36, up from -38.
