Huntington a busy lender

I wanted to follow-up on your story in the Oct. 12 Business Journal regarding Wells Fargo and "the last bank standing for small business."

While I understand you were citing national data for SBA lending, the state of Michigan story is far different and certainly more relevant for local businesses.  While the growth of Wells Fargo in our market has been impressive and we applaud their efforts in the community, Wells Fargo ranks only No. 13 in the number of SBA loans made in Michigan in the last 12 month reporting period ending Sept. 30, 2009, as reported by the Small Business Administration (21 loans).

In contrast, Huntington Bank again ranked No. 1 with 184 SBA loans made during that period.  The next nearest bank lenders were Citizens Republic at 136, and Fifth Third at 95.

Editor’s note: In the Top SBA Lenders List published in the Sept. 21 Business Journal, Huntington National Bank was ranked as the top bank organization on the list based on 2008 Dollar Amount of West Michigan Loans.
