Change Ups: Rising Star attorney to serve on First Tee board

Charlie Goode, a partner with Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, has been elected to serve on the board of The First Tee of West Michigan, a nonprofit with a mission to impact the lives of young people with programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

Goode concentrates his practice in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, securities regulation and general corporate and regulatory matters, with an emphasis on representing financial institutions. Michigan Super Lawyers recognized him as a Rising Starin 2012.


Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell named Sun Title winner of the 2012 Best Reuse of a Building. Renovations to the building at 1410 Plainfield Ave. NE included restoring the original brick façade and window openings and the historic brick-and-oyster tile flooring. The title agency also announced results of its restructuring and refining initiative, which has fueled a 50 percent growth in business operations. It now employs 32 full-time people, 19 of whom were hired between January 2011 and October 2012.


Matt Uhl has joined the business banking team of Huntington Bank as an assistant vice president, serving the Greater Grand Rapids business area.


Grand Rapids-based DK Security announced the addition of a downtown Lansing office, 700 N. Washington, which manages more than 8,400 weekly hours of security officer services and 328 security officers.

Tom Dumez is the founder of a new Wyoming-based business, Prime Compliance LLC, which provides compliance, training and consulting predominately in HIPAA and HITECH. Dumez is a certified HIPAA professional and certified security and compliance specialist with 12 years in the records and information management industry.


Grand Rapids Community College announced its West Side Learning Corner will relocate within the Leslie E. Tassell M-TEC, 622 Godfrey Ave. SW, effective July 1, 2013, to meet the rising demand for its GED and ESL programs. The Corner serves 400 students with an additional 350 students on the waiting list.

Michigan Health Council has granted a Building Michigan’s Health Care Workforce Education and Training Award to Davenport University for its efforts to create flexible opportunities to complete health information management degrees. The council created the award in 2008 to recognize efforts Michigan health care employers are making to expand, diversify and improve the quality of Michigan’s health care work force.


Peter M. Perez, a West Michigan business leader, has joined the 10-member board of directors of Legacy Trust and the Legacy Trust Holding Co. Perez and his wife, Carroll, own Grand Rapids-based Carter Products Co., a leading producer of accessory equipment for industrial woodworking machinery.


Michigan Department of Human Services announced seven colleges will share an $800,000 grant to provide former foster youth with a support program to help them succeed in higher education. Colleges receiving the funds are: Ferris State, Michigan State, Wayne State, Baker College of Flint, Saginaw Valley, Eastern Michigan and University of Michigan-Flint.


The Leapfrog Group announced Bronson Methodist Hospital and Bronson Battle Creek Hospital have maintained an A Hospital Safety Score. They continue to be the only hospitals in Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties to receive the highest possible grade. The Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publically available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries and medical and medication errors.


The Waddell Center in downtown Grand Rapids announced the near completion of a major remodeling of its lower level at 1115 Taylor Ave. NW. The new facility will serve up to 300 guests and have the capability to host weddings, corporate gatherings, business meetings, exhibitions and parties. Brann’s Distinctive Catering has been selected as the exclusive caterer of the new event center.


Acrisure Benefits Group announced the addition of Devon Levandoski, benefits consultant, to its advisory team.

Becky Stornant has joined Lighthouse Group as a personal insurance account executive.

Jim Brazel from The Navigator Truck Insurance Agency Inc. has earned the Specialist in Transportation and Risk designation from Great West Casualty Co.

Michelle Brown has joined Farm Bureau Insurance as a new agent serving the area from 6650 Crossings Drive, Suite D, in Grand Rapids.


Dykema announced it earned 95 points out of a possible 100 in the 2013 Corporate Equity Index conducted by the Human Rights Campaign. The rating is 25 points higher than it earned last year.

Mika Meyers Beckett & Jones PLC announced Best Lawyers has selected James R. Brown as 2013 Lawyer of the Year for Municipal Law and Larry J. Gardner as 2013 Lawyer of the Year for Oil & Gas Law for Grand Rapids.

Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge announced the addition of Lori L. Gibson as chief operating officer. Gibson oversees finances, facilities, human resources, marketing, technology and business planning for all three of the firm’s offices.

Varnum Law in Grand Rapids announced it has been recognized by Martindale-Hubbleas a 2013 Top Ranked Law Firm in the United States. The honor is achieved when at least one-third of the firm’s attorneys attain an AV Preeminent rating, which reflects a combination of achieving a Very High General Ethnical Standards rating and a Legal Ability numerical rating.

The law firm of Warner Norcross & Judd LLP has been recognized as a Go-To Law Firm by American Lawyer Media. Warner Norcross was nominated by medical device manufacturer Stryker Corp. as a Go-To Law Firm for patent prosecution. This is the second year the law firm has been featured on the list.


Patriot Realty announced Linda Sheiko has joined the firm as a Realtor. Sheiko specializes in single family homes, condominiums and relocation assistance.


East Hills restaurant Grove was honored as one of America’s top 100 restaurants for American cuisine by online dining reservation provider OpenTable in its 2012 Diners’ Choice Award. The awards reflect the opinions of more than 5 million reviews for more than 15,000 restaurants in all 50 states and the District of Columbia between Nov. 1, 2001, and Oct. 31, 2012.


IT Resource announced it has hired Kim Helmers on a full-time basis as the company’s first sales and marketing intern. Helmers is a senior majoring in business administration at Central Michigan University.


Cellular & More, a Verizon Wireless premium retailer, has expanded to the Grand Rapids area with the addition of a Cascade location at 5563 28th St. SE, near the Meijer store. The new 4,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility features a comprehensive display area showcasing the latest devices.
