The Macatawa Area Express, better known to its Holland and Zeeland riders as MAX Transit, is introducing a new text-alert service to let passengers know if their bus is delayed or detoured.

Riders can sign up for the text alerts by texting to “313131” and typing “maxtransit” into the message area. They also can subscribe through MAX’s website, or by visiting the MAX Transit Facebook page.

Those who sign up will receive a confirmation message and may receive up to three text messages a month concerning bus-route changes or disruptions, special promotions, urgent news items and other important information. Subscribers can always opt out of the text service.

The transit service also announced its 2013 schedule for its monthly travel-training classes, which train participants about how to plan trips and ride the fixed bus routes.

Classes run for 75 minutes and explain each fixed bus route. Participants learn how to read bus schedules, plan trips and how to make transfers. They also receive personal assistance in planning their specific trips and get a brief tour of a MAX bus at the end of the class.

Classes are free, but participants are required to register by calling MAX customer service at (616) 355-1010. All classes will be held at the MAX administration offices at the Padnos Center, 171 Lincoln Ave., Holland.
