Change Ups: Visbeen snags Best in the Midwest award

Visbeen Architects won six awards in the National Association of Home Builder’s 2012 Best in American Living Awards, including the high honor of Best in the Midwest. The award-winning projects included a sprawling estate, a cottage remodel, an Adirondack cabin and the conceptual design of a storybook home. The top honor went to an infill project in East Grand Rapids called the Warren.


The Michigan Farm Bureau honored the Ottawa County Farm Bureau with its Excellence in Grassroots Lobbying Award for its lobbying efforts on behalf of its farmer members at the local, state and national level.


Prein & Newhof announced the additions of airport engineers Bob Nelesen and Jon Van Duinen and former Gerald R. Ford International Airport executive director Jim Koslosky.


Clock Conversions businessman Ron Mohr has been appointed northern representative on the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association board of directors.


AAA Michigan honored the Norton Shores Police Department with a $17,000 grand prize in the 2013 Award for Traffic Safety Excellence.

Ed Wilson, general manager for Country Inn & Suites East Beltline, was named the inaugural honoree of the Joe Tomaselli Hotelier of the Year Award by Experience Grand Rapids, West Michigan Sports Commission and Kent County Lodging Association.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration renewed its MVPP State Award to Herman Miller’s Midwest Distribution Center in Holland. It is the state’s highest workplace safety and health award.

State Sen. Rick Jones is the recipient of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police Legislator of the Year Award.


The Bank of Holland announced the promotion of Michael Sytsma to senior vice president-business banking manager. He will be responsible for the Grand Rapids commercial lending team.

Calvin College history professor James Bratt is the 21st recipient of the college’s Presidential Award for Exemplary Teaching, the highest distinction Calvin bestows to a faculty member. Calvin also announced its graduates are among the national leaders in pass rates on the certified public accountant exam, with nearly 75 percent passing the exam on their first attempt in 2012.

Cindy Todd, an associate professor and chair of the art education program at Ferris State University’s Kendall College of Art and Design, is the recipient of the National Art Education Student Chapter Sponsor Award of Excellence.

Van Andel Institute researchers have launched an initiative called Pathways of Hope that will study tuberous sclerosis complex, a rare genetic disorder often diagnosed during infancy or childhood. The disorder causes tumors in vital organs throughout the body.
