Is Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park the eighth wonder of the world?
Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park has been named one of the top 30 Must-See Museums on the planet by 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, ranked the eighth-best public garden in the U.S. by TripAdvisor and is the second-most-visited cultural institution in Michigan.
So it’s no wonder that Experience Grand Rapids, the county’s official destination marketing organization, has nominated Meijer Gardens for the 8th Wonder of the World virtual competition being conducted by VirtualTourist.
“The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a world-class destination not to be missed,” said Doug Small, Experience GR president.
“Not only does the Meijer Gardens have an expansive botanical garden and internationally acclaimed sculpture park, but features international artists, a children’s garden, Michigan’s farm garden and an amphitheater for summer concert events. This landmark is certainly a world wonder,” added Small.
Meijer Gardens has 132 acres of indoor and outdoor gardens and has more than 500,000 visitors each year.
8th Wonder voting
The public will determine which top-flight attraction gets named the 8th Wonder via online voting from now through Sept. 30 at VirtualTourist.com/8thwonder.com.
VirtualTourist is a travel research website operated by the TripAdvisor media group.
“As an organization, we are humbled and honored to be nominated for such a global acknowledgement. We hope that the community will continue to support us in votes there,” said David Hooker, the Meijr Gardens' president and CEO.
Two hundred attractions have been nominated and whichever one gets the most votes will be crowned the winner and will be featured on the nationally syndicated TV show “Extra.”
The 8th Wonder also will receive a massive media relations campaign push from VirtualTourist.
“As one of the best travel guide resources on the web, members and visitors to our site have been to almost every country in the world,” said Giampiero Ambrosi, general manager of VirtualTourist.com. “We are eager to see which landmark they will choose to be crowned the 8th Wonder of the World.”
