Founders Brewing opens doors to expansion

Founders Brewing Co. opened its new-look space on Monday — after a two week taproom closure and months of construction.

The expansion

The brewery substantially upgraded its taproom space, adding 40 percent more floor space, a larger porch and an outdoor beer garden with an outdoor bar.

The outdoor area has features to help it through at least three seasons, including gas heat and extensions for free-standing heaters, as well as two built-in fireplaces.

Founders kicked back to the original Brassworks Building location, with the original bar installed into a portion of the new space.

The deli has been upgraded with new menu items and 30 percent more space.

The company store also grew, in space and merchandise selection.

The brewery will finish up a new education, event rental space and offices in the near future.


Grand Rapids-based Founders Brewing employs 176 people, but another 10 could be hired to support the taproom expansion.

The expansions to the brewing facility that came before the taproom work give Founders the ability to produce nearly 320,000 barrels a year.

The brewery expects to brew about 125,000 barrels this year, up from 71,000 barrels last year.
