The YWCA has named the seven West Michigan women who will be honored at its annual Tribute! awards tomorrow.

About 800 guests are expected to join the winning ladies at an awards luncheon by the YWCA West Central Michigan, at DeVos Place from noon–1:30 p.m.

The YWCA’s Tribute! Awards have honored more than 175 women since 1977 for their contributions to the community — by empowering women and fighting racism.

“This originally started out really small — a way for the YWCA to recognize women connected to the organization and women who were volunteering for the organization,” said Lauren Sikkema, YWCA special events and donor database coordinator. “Over the years, it’s expanded to all aspects of the community.”

Each winner was nominated by the community based on qualifications such as demonstrated leadership, community impact, vision and reflection of YWCA values.

The winners represent several categories: advocacy; arts; business, management, industry and labor; community service; professions; sports, fitness and wellness and student.

Each winner receives an honorary pin, and the winner of the student category also receives a $2,000 Judy Lloyd Student Leadership Award Scholarship.

YWCA West Central Michigan received about 60 nominations this year.

“The selection of women is just crazy inspiring,” Sikkema said.
