Three West Michigan cities rank among the best places for “job seekers” throughout the state.

Kentwood, Wyoming and Portage place in the top 10 ranking of the “Best Places in Michigan for Job Seekers” by NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy site.

The website notes that many people are looking for “employment opportunities in Michigan’s economy."

The ranking evaluates a set of criteria to assess the job market in different cities: growth, affordability and unemployment.

The site assessed growth in the working-age population — ages 16 and older, from 2009 to 2011 — to determine if a city was attracting workers and exhibiting a trend of upward population growth.

It looked at a city’s median household income, in 2011, to see if workers made a good living. It also analyzed the monthly homeowner costs, including mortgage payments, to see if the city had a reasonable cost of living.

The ranking also factors the unemployment rate this past August.
