Griffins light lamp on Wednesday hockey night
After getting off to its best start in franchise history this season, the Grand Rapids Griffins begin another season tonight.
The Griffins, the businesses that make up the Arena District and Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. will drop the puck tonight on the fourth consecutive year for Wednesday is Hockey Night, when the defending Calder Cup Champions play host to the Chicago Wolves at Van Andel Arena.
Tonight’s game, at 7 p.m., is the first of five mid-week contests that will run through March.
The other dates for Wednesday is Hockey Night are Jan. 8, Jan. 15, Feb. 5 and March 6.
The games give ticketholders a chance to cash in on pre-game happy hour specials and post-game Wednesday is Hockey Hockey Night specials at Arena District restaurants and taverns: The Apartment Lounge, Back Forty Saloon, Bar Divani, The Bistro, The B.O.B., Buffalo Wild Wings, Grand Rapids Brewing Co, HopCat, J. Gardella’s Tavern, McFadden’s Restaurant and Saloon, Mojo’s Dueling Piano Bar, Ritz Koney Bar and Grille, Stella’s Lounge, Sundance Grill & Bar and T.G.I. Friday’s.
So is Peppino’s Sports Grille, which is also hosting the post-game parties that will include Griffins players.
To show their support for the promotion, business owners in the Arena District purchased 3,000 Wednesday night tickets and then distributed those to dozens of organizations: some of the recipients include Cherry Street Health Services, Dwelling Place of Grand Rapids, the Grand Rapids police and fire departments, Grand Rapids Public Schools, Heart of West Michigan United Way, Kids’ Food Basket, Mel Trotter Ministries and the Salvation Army.
Tonight’s game is also the first Winning Wednesday contest, a promotion sponsored by Amway Corp.
Every time the Griffins win at home on Wednesday, each fan in attendance will receive a free ticket to the next Wednesday game. Also, the first 300 fans that visit the Amway table in Section A will receive a free gift.
Through the team’s first 23 games this season, the Griffins are 17-4-1-1 for a winning percentage of .783. That marks the best start ever for the franchise, which began playing in October 1996.
