A local contractor is traveling east next month to break ground on a Whole Foods.

Wolverine Building Group in Grand Rapids said last week that it will build the 36,000-square-foot supermarket in the Lansing market in Meridian Township, at 2756 Grand River Drive.

The project is scheduled to be completed in fourth quarter of this year.

A&G, LLC is the developer, and the project is designed by BRR Architecture.

The organic market will mark Whole Foods’ seventh store in the state and its only store west of Ann Arbor, according to the Whole Foods website.

The project’s land will be leased to Whole Foods, but a building permit has not yet been submitted, a Meridian Township spokesperson said. The property is vacant land and the former site of a trailer park.

The Whole Foods will feature a pub and coffee bar, salad bar, cafeteria and outdoor seating by a fireplace.

“Whole Foods will be a welcome addition to the Lansing area,” said Jim Reyers, project manager at Wolverine Building Group.
