Griffins pack schedule with promotions
The traditional New Year’s Eve celebration is on the Grand Rapids Griffins’ schedule for the 18th time, but the city’s hockey team has plenty of other events in store for fans during the 2014-15 season, too.
Included are several giveaways, the ever-popular $2 Beers and $2 Hot Dogs nights and several high school hockey games to warm up the crowd.
Grand Rapids hosts 14 games on Fridays, all of which will feature the beer and hot dog promotion and the Free Ride Friday deal, which allows fans to ride The Rapid free of charge with a Griffins ticket.
The season opens on Oct. 10, a Friday, with an LED glowstick giveaway, post-game skate and auction for a Comerica Park outdoor game jersey.
A costume contest will be held on Oct. 31.
The 14th annual matinee game, which starts at 11 a.m. and includes interactive and educational displays for elementary and high school students, is set for Nov. 5.
The Griffins host the 18th Annual New Year’s Eve Celebration with a post-game indoor fireworks show on Dec. 31.
Van Andel Institute’s Purple Community Game is set for Feb. 13.
Two “decade nights” will be held, including a celebration of the 1980s on Jan. 9 and an evening commemorating the ’90s on March 20.
Fans can bring dogs to the March 22 game.
Other giveaway dates are Nov. 15 Lego Night, Dec. 27 team calendar, Jan. 10 Griffins winter hat, Jan. 24 Scout Night/superhero lunchbox, Jan. 31 Griffins texting gloves, Feb. 7 Mitch Callahan bobblehead, Feb. 14 Griffins jersey scarf, March 14 Griffins cereal bowl and April 4 Tomas Jurco bobblehead.
Along with the special hot dog and beer pricing on Fridays, there are several other yearlong promotions.
Fridays also are College Night, which allows college students to receive a $13 upper bowl ticket and a free pass to the post-game party at McFadden’s. The tickets are regularly $19 on game day.
Wednesdays see Amway Winning Wednesdays, which result in a free ticket for the next Wednesday game following a win. Hump day also means ticketholders can enjoy specials before and after the game are participating Arena District restaurants and bars.
Active duty and retired military members can buy four upper bowl tickets for $13 each to every home game.
Grand Rapids Public Library and Kent District Library cardholders can get $2 off ticket prices for lower and upper bowl seats.
Post-game autograph sessions will be held on Nov. 15, Dec. 27, Jan. 31, Feb. 21, March 14 and April 4. Post-game skates will be available Oct. 10, Nov. 14, Dec. 31, Jan. 10, Feb. 14, March 22 and April 18.
