The new senior vice president of global human resources at Wolverine Worldwide was previously a senior HR executive at a global automaker.

The Rockford-based footwear maker said last week that Melissa Howell joins the company with more than 24 years of experience in HR management, which she acquired while working with General Motors Company.

Howell most recently served as General Motors’ SVP of global human resources and also held numerous human resource leadership roles during her time with the company.

General Motors has more than 200,000 employees throughout 150 countries.

Howell holds a master’s degree in industry relations from Wayne State University and a bachelor’s degree in employee relations from Michigan State University.

Directing “global growth”

Howell will report directly to Blake Krueger, Wolverine Worldwide's chairman, CEO and president.

“The company is very pleased to welcome a human resource leader of Melissa's caliber to the Wolverine Worldwide team,” Krueger said. “She has an extensive background in leading the human resource function for a global organization, and her proven strength in both organizational and leadership development matches up well with our company's continued plans for global growth across our 15-brand portfolio.”

Krueger expects Howell will contribute to the company’s position as a global leader in footwear.

"It's an honor to join Wolverine Worldwide,” Howell said.

Wolverine Worldwide is one of the world's leading marketers of footwear and apparel in several categories: casual, work, uniform, children’s, active, athletic and outdoor sport.

The company markets products under several brands: Merrell, Sperry Top-Sider, Hush Puppies, Saucony, Wolverine, Keds, Stride Rite, Sebago, Cushe, Chaco, Bates, HYTEST and Soft Style.
