Change Ups: Frankenmuth lodge is family favorite

The Bavarian Inn Lodge in Frankenmuth has received the 2014 Family Vacation Favorite Award from Family Vacation Critic, an online resource for parents looking for a family-friendly place to spend a weekend or a longer vacation. Within the lodge is the Family Fun Center, which includes a host of video games, an 18-hole Willy’s Kingdom mini-golf course and an indoor water park complete with three pools, two whirlpools and two water slides.


Cynthia Hagedorn has been named regional coordinator of the Waterfront Film Festival in South Haven, a new full-time position created to facilitate growth of the popular summer festival into a year-round event with a wider regional reach.

Four students from Baker College of Muskegon won first place in the online Global Business strategy simulation competition: Kenneth Arraut, Norton Shores; Cormeka Bates, Muskegon; Ayerim Arevalo, North Muskegon; and Sonya Trimbur, Whitehall. They created a fictitious camera company that competed in the global market arena.

Calvin College board of trustees has appointed current vice chair Craig Lubben as chair-elect. He will assume the board chair duties from current chair Scott Spoelhof after the board’s May 2015 meeting.

Grand Valley State University’s master’s program in medical and bioinformatics program has been ranked 19th in the nation by MBA Healthcare Management.

Hope College has named Jeff Puckett its new vice president for development and alumni engagement, beginning in January 2015. Also, Robert N. DeYoungreceived the college’s Meritorious Service Award in recognition of his decades of service. DeYoung is a 1956 Hope graduate who served in various capacities on the staff from 1965 until retiring as vice president for college advancement in 2000.

Grand Rapids Community College’s Secchia Institute for Culinary Education Student Scholarship Fundreceived $18,019 from more than 60 restaurants from meals sold during Restaurant Week Grand Rapids. The donation has grown the fund to $92,689 since 2010. Also, executive director of the GRCC Foundation, Donald MacKenzie, announced four $1,000 scholarship winners to continue their culinary studies at SICE: Megan AmanteKara Faasen, Emily Dilly and Jeffery Myers.


The Center for Physical Rehabilitation announced the addition of physical therapists Tiffany Basore and Betsy Graney. Both are graduates of the clinical doctorate of physical therapy program at GVSU.

Michael S. Jakubowski, M.D., has been named chief medical officer for Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. He has been a member of the medical staff since 1987.

The Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft will return to Grand Rapids in 2015.The tournament will take place July 20-26 at Blythefield Country Club and will again benefit Meijer’s Simply Give program. The 2014 event raised $600,000 to feed hungry families across the Midwest.
