A University of Michigan student from West Michigan has been named a Rhodes scholar.

David Moore of Holland is pursuing a master's degree in mechanical engineering after getting his bachelor's degree in the same field last spring.

Moore, an alum of Holland High School, will enter Oxford University in England next October with 31 other U.S. men and women. Moore is the lone scholar from Michigan in the 2015 class.

The value of the prestigious scholarship averages about $50,000 a year.

Moore has created a mechanism that allows wheelchair users to use a backpack with greater ease.

He's also a former captain of the Michigan men's swim team.
