Accounting firm enters market
A statewide accounting firm specializing in government and nonprofit auditing is expanding into the West Michigan market.
St. Johns-based Abraham & Gaffney said last week that it will open an office in Grand Rapids at Centennial Plaza, at 2851 Charlevoix Dr. SE.
The office, its fourth in the state, will open on Feb. 16.
The firm also operates offices in East Lansing and Auburn Hills.
The approximately 1,600-square-foot leased space will serve clients across the region.
Catherine Pearce, firm administrator at Abraham & Gaffney, said the office will house audit team members and focus on serving existing and new government and nonprofit clients.
Clients will also have access to additional services such as accounting, consulting and grant management.
“We only audit government and nonprofit, so it is doing single audits and governmental audits, which covers townships, villages, counties, schools, libraries and transportation,” Pearce said. “We have a few clients over on the west side already. We have a few schools in the Montcalm area, a few in Kent County and a few in Kalamazoo County.”
The audit team in the Grand Rapids office will be comprised of there full-time members: Joshua Laramy, CPA; Erica Bills, staff accountant; and Evan Wall, staff accountant.
The firm anticipates adding a couple of interns in the spring to complement the staff and will have an audit partner working out of the location on an as-needed basis.
“Our audit team itself is 26 people,” Pearce said. “We travel all over the state already, so we are able to bring in as many as we need, depending on how big the job.”
Four members of the Abraham & Gaffney team are audit partners: Steve Kirinovic, CPA; Alan Panter, CPA; Aaron Stevens, CPA; and William Tucker IV, CPA.
The firm’s decision to expand into West Michigan was partly based on it already serving multiple existing clients in the region and the related travel by team members.
“We already service some clients there, and we just wanted to be in that location to grow, to have more west-side municipalities and nonprofits,” Pearce said. “We have also grown in the number of people we have hired, and a few of them are from the west side.
“Mostly, it is to try to open our market a little. We are just excited to build that side of the practice.”
