Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has published a book where he shares a number of life lessons he’s learned over the years.

The 162-page book, “Big Lessons from a Small Town,” which is published by Susan Bays/Arbutus Press, focuses on Schuette’s experiences in his hometown of Midland and the people who have influenced his life.

Schuette wrote the book at the urging of several friends he’s shared his stories with over the years.

“He was recounting these stories already, and people kept telling him to put it into a book,” said John Truscott, president, Truscott Rossman.

Life lessons

Each of the book’s chapters offers a lesson Schuette learned from someone, from local Midland businessmen to political heavyweights, such as former Secretary of State James Baker and former U.S. President George H. W. Bush.

Truscott said he thinks readers will be particularly interested to read the chapter on defeat, “Don’t Let Defeat Define You,” where Schuette opens up about his 1990 U.S. Senate race loss and shares how he got past that disappointment.

“They will learn a lot about how he handled a very public defeat,” Truscott said. “He admits he was a cocky 29-year-old at the time and that defeat grounded him. He went back home and that’s when he met his wife.”

Also included in the book are stories about Schuette’s relationship with his stepfather, who didn’t want him to run for the senate seat and refused to support him in his campaign.

“I think you really get to understand his love for his family and hometown,” Truscott said.

Sports and politics

Despite having spent his career in politics, Schuette includes many quotes from sports figures in the book and several of the chapters take common sports phrases as their headings, such as “Lesson 2,” “Don’t Be a Ball Hog” and “Lesson 4,” “To Raise Your Game, Listen to Your Coaches.”

The reason, according to Truscott, is Schuette learned a lot from his years playing sports while growing up, and, therefore, it made sense to incorporate sports references into the book.

The book also includes a forward by Michigan State University head football coach Mark Dantonio.
