A nonprofit geared toward locally owned businesses has named the nominees for its annual awards ceremony.

Grand Rapids-based Local First named 49 West Michigan businesses and individuals as nominees for its sixth-annual Meeting and LocalMotion Awards, which well be held on Jan. 27 at the Goei Center in Grand Rapids from 5-8 p.m.

People can register for the event online.

The awards

The LocalMotion Awards was started in 2011 as a way to promote better business practices and recognize the achievements of local businesses and individuals in West Michigan.

There are several LocalMotion Award categories: the Guy Bazzani Local Legacy Award; Triple Bottom Line Award; Mover & Shaker Award; Local Hero Award; and Change Agent Award.

Nominations were submitted by community members and businesses and were open to anyone who felt a local business or individual exemplified the qualities recognized by each award.

The nominees then filled out an application and took an impact assessment to provide sustainability metrics, and an awards committee comprising business owners and community stakeholders selected the winners.

Previous winners for the Guy Bazzani Local Legacy Award include Bing Goei, Laurie Beard, Jaye Van Lenten, Amy Ruis and Rob McCarty.

Local First

Local First, founded in 2003, supports and advocates for local business ownership and represents more than 800 locally owned businesses in West Michigan.

The nonprofit works to develop an economy grounded in local ownership and focuses on turning West Michigan into a region "made stronger and empowered by diverse local ownership and collaboration."
