Several organizations will be honored downtown next week by a local nonprofit for their dedication to empowering women in the workplace.

The Grand Rapids-based Women’s Resource Center will present the Kent District Library, Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors and UPS with a Pillar Award at the 27th-annual Pillar Awards on March 9 in Grand Rapids at the Amway Grand Plaza, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The award honors employers that have implemented best practices that empower women in their workplaces.

The awards luncheon is expected to have more than 500 members of the local business community in attendance.

Community pillars

Since 1987, Women’s Resource Center has honored progressive West Michigan employers who empower women at work with policies designed to recruit, retain and advance women in the workplace.

More than 80 employers have received the Pillar Award, named to represent organizations acting as pillars for working women and helping the Women’s Resource Center fulfill its mission of improving women’s workplace and economic opportunities.

“The Pillar Awards is an opportunity to honor local businesses that exemplify the mission of the Women’s Resource Center,” said Sharon Caldwell-Newton, executive director, Women’s Resource Center.

Caldwell-Newton added that the nonprofit “would not be able to provide the breadth of services” to women in the area “without the support from members of the business community who have embraced our vision.”

Tickets to the Pillar Awards are available online.
