Nonprofit kicks off stadium project with $3M gift
A nonprofit in the region has kicked off a fundraising campaign for a stadium renovation project with a $3-million head start.
The Grand Haven Area Community Foundation, or GHACF, said yesterday that it has received the $3-million bequest from the late philanthropist Lynne Sherwood.
The gift will be used for the redevelopment efforts at Waterfront Stadium.
“We are a community that is steeped in generosity, and sometimes through loss and sadness, we can create opportunities that take our breath away,” GHACF President Holly Johnson said.
“Lynne Sherwood was one of our community’s most-generous philanthropists, and her bequest to the foundation will have a broad and positive impact on this community forever. While Lynne’s death is still painful, she put great trust in the Community Foundation to facilitate her legacy and ensure that her generosity will continue into perpetuity.”
The surprise donation helps with a significant portion of the estimated $4.5-million cost of the stadium renovations.
The foundation said funds for the stadium project will be obtained through grants and community donations, with the full support of the Grand Haven City Council.
Civic leaders are expected to announce a comprehensive fundraising development plan for Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium in the near future.
Donations can be made online through the GHACF.
