A local contractor is one of three finalists for a national award for safety innovation.

Pioneer Construction in Grand Rapids was named one of the finalists for the Green Cross for Safety Innovation Award by the National Safety Council.

The winner will be announced at the Green Cross for Safety Dinner this Thursday in Chicago.

The other two nominees are United Airlines and Michael Gittelman of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The Safety Innovation Award is given to “the corporation, coalition, organization or individual that has achieved evidence-based success by taking an innovative approach to solving a long-held safety challenge.”

Pioneer Construction is being recognized on its efforts to help change the way employees look at workplace injuries, by implementing custom tools and processes to eliminate risks.

“To have our efforts recognized by the National Safety Council and to be in such prestigious company is a real honor for all of us at Pioneer,” said Tim Schowalter, president and CEO, Pioneer Construction. “I could not be happier with our team. Workplace safety is an ongoing endeavor. There is always room for improvement. We will continue to innovate and build on our strong foundation.”
