A major golf tournament in the area has awarded a sponsor exemption to a Michigan native who started playing the sport when she was 15.

Michigan State University alum and pro golfer Lindsey McPherson was given a sponsor exemption for the 2016 Meijer LPGA Classic at Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, just north of Grand Rapids.

McPherson also had an exemption for the event in 2014.

“I am so thankful to Meijer and their team for giving me another opportunity to compete at this level,” McPherson said. “I’m proud to represent Meijer and Michigan State, and I look forward to playing with the best female golfers in the world.”

The Flushing native finished her collegiate golf career at MSU with a 77.42 scoring average in 60 rounds of golf.

She had two top-10 finishes and 102 birdies in 20 tournaments.

McPherson, who graduated from MSU in 2014, is sharing her "adventures as a professional golfer" online and at her social channels.

Meijer LPGA Classic

The Meijer LPGA Classic runs from June 14-19 with a full tournament and a week of festivities, such as a 5k run and walk, celebrity chef events and junior clinics.

Proceeds from the tournament head to Simply Give, Meijer’s hunger-relief program that helps re-stock food pantries across the Midwest.

The Meijer LPGA Classic has donated more than $1.3 million through Simply Give to date.
