Change Ups: Elzinga named Engineer of the Year

Holland-based Elzinga & Volkers’ independent consultant Paul Elzinga has been named the 2016 Engineer of the Year by the Western Chapter of Michigan Society of Professional Engineers. Elzinga received the award at a special ceremony at Riverfront Hotel in Grand Rapids. He has worked in the construction industry for more than 60 years, 56 of which have been with E&V. He received his certificate as a Registered Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering in 1965. 


Holland-based Driesenga & Associates has hired two new engineering technicians. Derrick Watson will work in the Grand Rapids office and Christopher Lossie in the Kalamazoo office.

Hungerford Nichols CPAs + Advisors announced the addition of Kevin Daihl as senior accountant and the promotion of Joan Start to administrative coordinator.

Grand Rapids Opportunities for Women has temporarily moved to Suite 200 in its building at 25 Sheldon Blvd. SE while the office is undergoing a makeover. The GROW classroom is unaffected by the move.


Kent Quality Foods plans to construct a food-processing facility in Jamestown Charter Township, representing a $34.8 million investment by the family-owned company. The project is expected to create 140 jobs over three years. The project was awarded a $750,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant.


Empty The Shelters, a free adoption event made possible by Bissell Pet Foundation, helped 605 pets from 24 shelters in Michigan find adopted homes. The foundation covered 100 percent of the cost for adopters.


Kent County Health Department received a $25,000 grant from the National Association of County and City Health Organizations to enhance the preparation and response to infectious disease outbreaks.

Varnum corporate attorney Seth Ashby has been recognized in the May edition of Leader’s Edge for his work on roll-up acquisitions of approximately 70 insurance brokerage agencies totaling over $1 billion in upfront transactional value for a private equity-sponsored company. Varnum also announced Erin Haney has joined its tax law team in the Grand Rapids office. In addition to her law degree, Haney is a CPA who formerly worked for the Michigan Department of Treasury.
