A local electronic engineering firm that’s “dedicated” to the market plans to add 25 high-tech positions in town.

Grand Rapids-based DornerWorks, Ltd. plans to invest $1.3 million in its local operation and add the positions at its headquarters over the next three years, according to The Right Place today.

The firm is based at 3445 Lake Eastbrook Blvd. SE.

“We have been asked by several customers to open additional design and development engineering centers close to their locations, but we are dedicated to West Michigan, and we wanted to expand here,” said David Dorner, president and CEO, DornerWorks.

The Right Place, a regional economic development nonprofit in Grand Rapids, said that DornerWorks has won a $200,000 Michigan Strategic Fund high-tech grant for the project through the Michigan Business Development Program.

“The Right Place understood our business and the competitive situation we were in,” Dorner said. “Thanks to their efforts, along with their partners, we are able to continue growing in Grand Rapids.”

The Michigan Business Development Program is an incentive program designed to provide economic assistance to businesses with highly competitive projects that create jobs and investment in Michigan. The program’s high-tech grants are available to projects that create at least 25 high-tech jobs in Michigan.

“DornerWorks is involved in some of our nation’s most coveted aerospace and defense industry projects, and they employ the best and brightest engineering and electronic talent,” said Eric Icard, senior business development manager, The Right Place. “Assisting them through an expansion effort at their current location is a big win for Grand Rapids. DornerWorks growth can only help grow our region’s aerospace and defense industries.”

The Right Place said that this year, it has facilitated $47.2 million in capital investment and the creation of 358 jobs in West Michigan.

Founded in 2000, DornerWorks is one of the largest embedded engineering design services firms in the country.

The company is a provider of embedded electronics and software engineering services and solutions for multiple markets: aerospace, defense, medical, automotive and industrial.

Recently, DornerWorks has been awarded several Small Business Innovation Research Grants with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the U.S. Navy.
