More than 15,000 people are expected to converge downtown this week for a quilting conference.

American Quilter’s Society, or AQS, will return to downtown for its four-day conference, AQS QuiltWeek, which will be held from Wednesday through Saturday in Grand Rapids at DeVos Place.

There will be more than 750 quilts on display, with more than $54,000 in prizes to be awarded at the event for quilting excellence.

In addition, AQS QuiltWeek will be hosting a series of workshops and an extensive Merchant Mall comprised of more than 250 booths by both local and national vendors.

Evening events feature quilting celebrities presenting on fabric, quilting and life, including sessions with Gina Perkes and Mark Sherman.

Katherine Rupp, marketing director of AQS, said Grand Rapids has been “a mecca for creators and admirers of art for centuries,” and AQS is “excited” to be returning to the community.

AQS QuiltWeek is open to the public, and admission includes access to all special exhibits and the Merchant Mall.

People can purchase single and multi-day tickets online
