Urban doughnut shop preps for opening
A new doughnut shop is planning to open this month in a Grand Rapids neighborhood.
D’arts Donut Shop is scheduled to open in a 49-seat café in Eastown, at 1444 Lake Dr. SE, with a week of soft openings starting Aug. 22.
Construction of the shop began in March and finished earlier this month.
The doughnut shop will offer up to 13 flavors a day — from chocolate to whiskey bacon and lemon blueberry to chocolate peanut butter — along with Madcap coffee and breakfast and lunch options, with doughnut twists.
D’arts started last summer as a food truck by owner Adam Ouellette.
Ouellette and his wife found the location for a storefront while walking their dogs.
“We thought it was the perfect spot to join the thriving business community in Eastown and to be a part of the growing food scene in Grand Rapids,” Ouellette said.
Ouellette said the doughnuts are made with a recipe passed down through his family.
Glazes are made from scratch, and doughnuts are hand dipped daily.
Ouellette, a former Michigan State University chemistry major with plans to attend dental school, decided to return to his “lifelong love of baking” after working in restaurants throughout college.
