Church sells 77-acre site
A church in town has sold its 77-acre site along a major highway.
Sunshine Community Church, which is part of the Christian Reformed Church of North America, said yesterday that it has reached an agreement to sell its property and facilities in Grand Rapids, at 3300 E. Beltline Ave. NE, to Resurrection Life Church.
Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
The three-building campus was built in 1989. Sunshine Community Church was established in 1923 and has operated at four different locations in northeast Grand Rapids over its history.
The church has a 2,300-seat auditorium, which has been used for concerts, graduation ceremonies and conferences.
Sunshine Community Church has been looking for a smaller facility and property to better facilitate its membership, said Josh Blunt, the church’s lead pastor.
Blunt said Resurrection Life Church was searching for a facility similar to the one Sunshine was offering.
“We have been seeking a win-win scenario that would allow us to live more simply and re-direct God’s resources toward new movements of ministry in Grand Rapids,” Blunt said. “We are humbled to be able to work with another West Michigan congregation to give them a facility and property that fits their mission.”
The membership of Sunshine Community Church voted on the sale on Aug. 7. The church's Sunday worship, which regularly draws more than 400 people, will continue at the church until the sale is final.
Sunshine Community Church has yet to settle on a location for its future worships and 14 employees, but a search is ongoing, Blunt said.
“We are thrilled at this new chance to revitalize and re-launch Sunshine’s congregation somewhere else on the northeast side,” he said.
