College names EVP, provost and dean of faculty
A local college has removed the interim tag from a senior academic administrator.
Stephen Barrows, who has served as interim EVP, provost and dean of faculty at Aquinas College since March, will continue in the role on permanent basis.
Barrows stepped into the role following Gilda Gely’s departure for a position at Cambridge College.
Barrows presented to faculty, staff and students at five forum sessions where he received “strong support” from the campus community.
“Steve has been a true asset to Aquinas College,” Aquinas President Juan Olivarez said. “He will bring leadership, commitment and energy to all the challenges and initiatives in front of us, as he supports and promotes academic and student affairs at the college.”
As provost, Barrows will assist in the creation and implementation of the school’s academic priorities. As EVP, he is the school’s senior administrative officer. As dean of faculty, Barrows will be responsible for recruitment, retention and development of Aquinas’ faculty.
Since coming to Aquinas in 2013, Barrows has served as program coordinator of the economics department, was elected as vice-chair of the Faculty Executive Committee and was appointed to the college’s Strategic Leadership Team.
Previously, Barrows was an economics faculty member at the U.S. Air Force Academy and professor of aerospace studies at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He is also a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel.
Barrows received his bachelor’s in economics from the Air Force Academy, a master’s in economics from Penn State University and a Ph.D. in economics from Auburn University.
Barrows and his family are members of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in Grand Rapids.
