Attorney wins Outstanding Service Award from alma mater
A college has recognized a local attorney and alum for his outstanding service to the school.
Calvin College chose Perrin Rynders, class of ’83, as its 2016 Outstanding Service Award recipient at its annual Maroon & Gold Gala awards ceremony and homecoming celebration this fall.
Rynders, a trial attorney at Varnum in downtown Grand Rapids, was recognized for extraordinary volunteerism with Calvin and mentorship of Calvin students exploring the legal profession.
Mike VanDenend, director of alumni, parent and community relations at Calvin, said Rynders deserved the award, because of his long-standing service in a variety of capacities for Calvin, including music leadership, service with the alumni association and involvement with Calvin’s pre-law program.
“Perrin is a great role model candidate who has (served with Calvin) almost every year since he got out of law school,” VanDenend said. “In recent years, he has been a big supporter of our pre-law program. He helped strategize with Calvin professors and other people to prepare our pre-law students for the law profession, to help them understand it and know what their options might be.
“He has also helped develop a curriculum used during our January interim. He is currently part of a leadership that is developing a more organized alumni affinity group that will support our pre-law program at Calvin through internships, advocacy, fundraising — all types of avenues.”
Rynders has practiced at Varnum for more than 30 years.
During his time with Varnum, he has prosecuted and defended a wide variety of business and commercial disputes, ERISA cases, employment cases, product liability and personal injury cases, health care fraud and tax matters.
Since 2014, he has led the litigation team, which has filed more than 150 cases on behalf of client companies against Michigan's largest insurer in a hidden access fees matter.
He also was recently inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers.
Outstanding Service Award
The Outstanding Service Award was established in 1968 to recognize alumni and friends who have shown outstanding efforts by donating their time and talents to Calvin and the Calvin community.
Recipients don’t need to be alumni or staff members, but they should have served Calvin over an extended period in a voluntary manner.
