The downtown of a town in the region is getting a new shopping center.

An unnamed developer broke ground last week on Center 120 in Ionia, at 120 S. Dexter St., according to Grand Rapids-based Ben Muller Realty Company.

Construction on the 6,000-square-foot center is expected to be completed by next April.

The developer chose to build in downtown Ionia because of its strong city center and redevelopment projects, along with the new $2.3-million Fred Meijer Grand River Valley Rail Trail, said Victoria Mitchell, the Ben Muller leasing agent for the project.

“The City of Ionia was very welcoming and accommodating,” Mitchell said. “We look forward to contributing to the rejuvenation and continued success of the Ionia business district.”

The building will have four sections, ranging from 1,300 square feet to 1,675 square feet, including an end-cap space with drive-thru potential.

Mitchell said national retailers are being looked at for some of the potential retail and office spaces.

Grand Rapids-based CopperRock Construction is the contractor on the project, which was designed by Grand Rapids-based Integrated Architecture.

The cost of the project was not disclosed, but no bank was needed for financing.
