Chicken fast-food chain plans location
A national chicken fast-food chain could be coming to a major shopping center in town.
Chick-fil-A is seeking a special land use permit from the Grand Rapids Planning Commission for a drive-thru on an “under-utilized parking lot” at Centerpointe Mall, at 3665 28th St. SE, next to Krispy Kreme. The permit will be voted on at the Jan. 12 meeting.
The new stand-alone, 4,800-square-foot location expects to hire up to 70 employees, according to the filing.
Chick-fil-A Development Manager Jason Hill is listed as the applicant, and the land is owned by New York-based Centerpointe Owner.
The proposed use for the parking lot section “is consistent with several nearby restaurants on the East Beltline and 28th Street corridors with drive-throughs, including Culver's, Wendy’s, Qdoba and Arby’s,” the application says.
“The proposed improvements will provide new landscaping in the empty parking lot and improve traffic circulation with new landscape islands and drive aisle curbs,” Hill writes.
Chick-fil-A worked with local architecture firm Progressive AE on the application and restaurant.
Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A, founded in 1964, has more than 1,900 locations in 42 states and is a family owned company.
In August, the company broke ground on its first West Michigan location, at 1545 Edgeknoll Dr. SE in Gaines Township. It is expected to open in early 2017.
A Chick-fil-A opened in Lansing earlier this year, marking the fourth to open in the state, along with locations at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, a metro Detroit mall and in Rochester.
The company said in August it has aggressive expansion plans for Michigan.
A planned location at the former Fajita Republic site, at 2183 E. Beltline Ave. NE, was denied by the Grand Rapids Planning Commission in October.
