Jeweler closing doors
A local jewelry retailer with 100-year-old roots is closing.
Thomas S. Fox Diamond Jewelers in Kentwood, at 3090 28th St. SE, said it will start a “Going Out of Business Sale” in mid April.
The store is expected to close in June.
“Obviously, this is a very difficult decision,” said John Turrentine, the retailer’s president. “However, after much consideration, I have decided to pursue other career opportunities.”
The sale will offer up to 60 percent off the store’s inventory.
The company was founded in 1917 when Martin Fox opened Fox Jewelry Company on Monroe Avenue in downtown Grand Rapids.
The retailer grew into a 48-store footprint throughout the Midwest, before the third generation, Tom Fox, sold the company in 1990.
Tom Fox and his family started Thomas S. Fox Diamond Jewelers on 28th Street in 2001. Turrentine, Fox’s son-in-law, took over as president in 2003.
Tom Fox and his wife, Mickie Fox, have gifted millions of dollars to causes, such as Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Spectrum Health, Metro Health and Saint Mary’s Health Care, through the Tom and Mickie Fox Family Fund.
