Whitecaps expand concessions menu
The West Michigan Whitecaps will be offering fans some international flavor with new concession items this season — including their Fan Food Vote winner.
Fan Food winner
The winner of the team’s 2017 Fan Food Vote is Beercheese Poutine, a dish made up of pulled pork, barbecue sauce and green onions over waffle fries and inspired by poutine, a popular Canadian delectable.
Fans voted on one of 10 food items to be added to the menu for the 2017 season.
“When I saw the Whitecaps were looking for food ideas, I thought this would be a great addition to the Fifth Third Ballpark menu,” said Rusty Morningstar of Muskegon, who’s responsible for the winning submission. “I can’t wait for the fans to give it a try. Heck, I’ll be there opening day, and I may be the first in line.”
The poutine won out over items like I Full Tower, Alan Spammell and deep-fried bubble gum.
Whitecaps Food and Beverage Director Matt Timon said it’s been interesting to see the evolution of food items fans choose in the promotion, presented by Zeeland Food Services. He said previous winners were typically been chosen for their novelty.
“When we first started this promotion, outrageous items like the Declaration of Indigestion and the Baco won, but for the last few years, they’ve voted for taste,” Timon said. “This year, they chose wisely as the Beercheese Poutine tastes amazing. I can see this becoming a fan favorite for years to come.”
New menu items
The Beercheese Poutine will be served at the Game of Cones concession cart located on the concourse behind home plate, one of two new concession carts positioned around Fifth Third Ballpark. The Game of Cones cart will sell an edible bread cone that can be filled with pulled pork, mac ‘n’ cheese, bacon and several other options.
The new Wok Off cart is the ballpark’s first entry into Asian food and will offer teriyaki chicken, beef, rice and vegetables.
The Whitecaps have also added five notable concessions items to the menu.
- The Comstock Park Burger: A classic Whitecaps hamburger served on a pretzel bun with Monterey Jack cheese and Doritos, created by Mill Creek Middle School eighth-grader Carter Vander Meer and Comstock Park High School freshman Brenden Pelton
- Gluten-free Brazilian cheese bread
- Deep-fried Twinkies
- Cole’s Middles: mac ‘n’ cheese-stuffed Cole’s bread rolls
- Bac ‘n’ Bones: smoked pork ribs served on a bed of mac ‘n’ cheese
