Forbes has rated a pair of companies in the region among the nation’s “best employers.”

Based on a survey of 30,000 American workers in partnership with the research firm Statista, Forbes released its 2017 ranking of “America’s Best Employers” this week.

Among the 500 companies on the ranking with 5,000 employees or more, Kalamazoo-based Stryker ranks No. 193, and Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool ranks No. 446.

Using a scale of zero to 10, Statista asked employees how likely they are to recommend their company to friends or family. The firm weighted their answers to that question as the most important factor in determining the rankings.

Statista then asked employees to recommend other companies. Those recommendations also played into the ranking, to a lesser degree.

The firm split the responses into two groups: 300 mid-size employers (1,000 to 5,000 employees) and 500 large employers (5,000 or more employees). Forbes published “America’s Best Midsize Employers” as a separate ranking.
