Breweries and homebrewers create Pro-Am brews
Grand Rapids breweries are partnering with homebrewers to create a number of special brews.
The Beer City Brewers Guild is partnering with homebrewers to produce the Beer City Pro-Am. The beers brewed by the breweries and their partner homebrewers are slated to begin going on tap late this month.
The Beer City Pro-Am is the brainchild of Grand Rapids homebrewers Nick Rodammer and Jeremy Gavin, who approached Grand Rapids Brewers Guild President and Harmony Brewing Co. Co-owner Jackson Van Dyke in the winter.
"Many people don't realize just how talented the area's best homebrewers are, and this event is a great forum to showcase the level of creativity and skill the homebrewing community has to offer," Rodammer said. "That 20 different local breweries would so willingly commit to this event in such a short period of time speaks volumes about the craft beer community we have in Beer City."
Homebrewers qualified for the pro-am contest throughout 2016 and 2017 by placing in homebrewing competitions.
The qualifiers were then paired, at random, with breweries on April 30.
The beers will be judged by a panel of judges through a blind tasting process.
The Beer City Pro-Am Cup will be awarded at the the Beer City Brewers Guild Industry Picnic on Aug. 12 at 5 p.m. in Sparta at Long Lake Park, at 13747 Krauskopf NE, in the enclosed shelter. There will be 12 taps of homebrewed beer on-site. The guild said people can bring beer, wine and food to the event.
The Beer City Pro-Am Cup will be displayed at the award-winning brewery. In future years, the cup will be etched with winners’ names and displayed at the winning brewery.
