Chamber producing Medical Innovation Summit downtown
On the heels of a new biomedical research center opening downtown, the local chamber plans to host a summit for businesses to learn about medical innovation.
The Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce will host its Medical Innovation Summit from 7:30 a.m. to noon on Oct. 3 in the Steelcase Foundation Amphitheatre at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Secchia Center in Grand Rapids, at 15 Michigan St. NE.
The event is designed to inform businesses of the biomedical industry landscape in West Michigan and the associated economic opportunities.
The growth of the medical industry in Grand Rapids started 20 years ago with the founding of the Van Andel Institute, which spurred the development of Medical Mile — one of the top economic drivers in Grand Rapids and West Michigan.
The health care and life sciences industry has experienced 38.7-percent job growth in West Michigan over the past 10 years, $2 billion in investment over the past 15 years and supports more than 44,000 local jobs, according to The Right Place, a Grand Rapids-based economic development agency.
On Sept. 20, MSU opened a new $88.1-million Grand Rapids Research Center. Earlier this year, Spectrum Health, the region’s largest health system, launched a $100-million medical innovation venture capital arm.
Dr. Norm Beauchamp, dean of the MSU College of Human Medicine, will be one of the event’s featured speakers, along with Gene Saragnese, chair and CEO of MedyMatch, and Christopher Chambers, VP of research at Spectrum Health.
The chamber said the event is geared toward those who are involved in medical innovation or the life sciences industry, looking for business development opportunities, want to understand how to serve companies or professionals involved in the industry, are curious about a growth industry in the West Michigan economy or are interested in networking with business and community leaders.
Tickets are $75 for chamber members and $100 for non-members.
Those interested in attending may register online.
