Attorney wins state bar award
The state bar will honor a local attorney this week for outstanding work in entertainment law.
The State Bar of Michigan’s Arts, Communications, Entertainment and Sports Section will present the annual John Hensel Award to Joe Voss, an attorney with Leavens, Strand & Glover, or LSG, at the Hensel Committee reception from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 20 at The Community House in Birmingham, at 380 S. Bates St.
Jeffrey Richardson is an attorney at the Miller Canfield Troy office and a member of the committee that selected Voss to receive the Hensel Award. He said the award is presented annually to a Michigan attorney for “significant contributions” to the state’s arts, entertainment or sports communities.
Voss has served in an of-counsel role at LSG since January, is affiliated with the firm’s Chicago office and practices primarily from Grand Rapids.
He advises companies in the film, television, digital media and music industries on general corporate, production-related and financing matters in Illinois, Michigan and throughout the U.S.
His primary experience is in advising clients on artist-cause collaborations and assisting them in using media to further their nonprofit missions. He also advises independent producers on financing and other legal issues that arise in the production process and maintains an active general corporate practice.
Voss previously worked at Clark Hill, where he led its entertainment industry practice.
He serves as director of strategic partnerships for Creative Many Michigan, a statewide nonprofit committed to advancing the creative industries in Michigan.
He is also serving his second consecutive term on the Michigan Film & Digital Media Office Advisory Council, a position to which he was appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder.
Voss earned a J.D. from the DePaul University College of Law and a B.A. from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.
Leavens, Strand & Glover is an entertainment, media and intellectual property law firm concentrating on creative industries and endeavors.
With offices in Chicago and Nashville, Tennessee, the firm represents both institutional and talent clients on transactional and litigation matters.
