Movie theater chain opens location
An international movie theater chain has opened another cineplex in the region.
AMC Theatres opened the location last week in downtown Kalamazoo, at 180 Portage St.
The cineplex has 10 auditoriums on the first floor with a movie screen in each.
AMC is leasing the property from Entertainment Properties Realty.
“Having a downtown theater is a critical part of our mix of amenities and services here,” said Andrew Haan, the president of Downtown Kalamazoo Inc., an economic development agency.
“It serves as an economic engine for our bars, restaurants and retail and an amenity for our residents and employees.”
Haan said Downtown Kalamazoo Inc. has been working with AMC for a number of months on the project.
“We are very heartened by their commitment — invested in the market as the largest theater operator in the country,” Haan said. “The fact that they see the potential in this market we think is a good bellwether for the health of downtown.”
Colin Young is the general manager of the AMC location.
Ryan Noonan, a spokesperson for AMC, said the cineplex features AMC’s signature plush power recliner seats and stadium-style seating, designed to give each row a more private and intimate viewing experience.
Noonan also said the location features AMC’s MacGuffins adult beverage concept, allowing guests who are at least 21 with a valid ID to purchase a beer, glass of wine or cocktail with their movies.
The cineplex also offers the chain’s Feature Fare menu, which has a variety of items: chicken and waffle sandwiches; cheeseburger sliders; chicken tenders; stone-fired flatbread pizzas; all-beef hot dogs; popcorn; pre-packaged gluten-free snacks; and more.
