Tavern-style restaurant opening on West Side
A new “American tavern” restaurant will move into the space vacated when a 40-year staple of the West Side closed.
Grand Rapids-based Peppino’s Restaurant Group plans to open the Westside Social American Tavern in Grand Rapids in mid-January.
The restaurant will be located in at the site of the former Shawmut Inn, at 2802 Lake Michigan Dr. NW.
Owners Joe DiLeonardo and Jennifer DiLeonardo have lived on the West Side for more than 25 years.
They said they plan to “celebrate and galvanize the area through partnerships with neighboring businesses and community members.”
“This restaurant is a celebration of the community we share and love, and we will highlight that in both the food and the atmosphere,” the pair said.
Westside Social’s menu will feature classic American comfort food and incorporate some traditional West Side foods as well. Many of the ingredients will be locally sourced, and all of it will be prepared from scratch and “affordably priced.”
The site has been renovated from the ground up. A stone fireplace will accent a new outdoor patio area. The interior will have a “modern but casual feel” and include elevated ceilings, a new bar and a bistro seating area with a garage door that opens to the patio.
General Manager Chris Durso, who formerly worked at Founders Brewing Co., will bring his beer knowledge to the 24-beer tap list.
A classic cocktail menu will also be available.
Westside Social will announce a job fair in the coming days, as well as updates on its website and social media platforms.
