Township secures more office space
A township outside of Grand Rapids has signed a lease for additional office space.
To accommodate a growing number of staff members, Cascade Township said last month it entered a short-term lease agreement with property owner Hinman for 5,000 square feet of office space located at 3040 Charlevoix Dr. SE.
The space will be used as is, and no money will be spent to change the current layout.
The new location will be occupied by the township’s Building Department, giving the township more office space at its current location.
The Building Department is expected to move in on Jan. 9.
Since 2000, the Cascade Township population has grown more than 25 percent, and the trend is expected to continue well into the future.
In order to meet the service demands of the residents and businesses, Township Manger Ben Swayze said the township must ensure there is enough space to accommodate organic staff growth.
“This short-term lease agreement will offer an immediate solution to space constraints, while we review our options,” Swayze said. “Shifting the Building Department will improve access for contractors and communities we serve, while allowing Cascade the ability to effectively re-organize our main office to provide the continued level of services expected by Cascade residents.”
The Building Department has also had to expand its workforce to meet growing demand from residents and businesses. The number of permits issued by the department has increased by 127 percent since 2009. It employs 10 people full-time.
The department was selected for relocation because of the clear division between its services and those service provided by other departments.
The Building Department also serves seven customer communities remotely, including Grand Rapids Township, Lowell Township, Ada Township, Vergennes Township, Plainfield Township, the City of East Grand Rapids and the City of Lowell, by issuing permits and completing inspections on a contractual basis.
The township provides assessing, building and zoning inspections, code enforcement, passports, elections, licenses, community and economic development and other services at its current location, at 2865 Thornhills Ave. SE
