Ranir reaches patent-infringement settlement with P&G
A local maker of oral care products has reached a settlement with Procter & Gamble after being sued last year for patent infringement.
Grand Rapids-based Ranir said this week it reached the settlement with Cincinnati-based P&G after the latter filed suit against Ranir on March 20, 2017 for allegedly infringing two patents related to tooth-whitening strip technology.
The lawsuit alleged Ranir’s private label tooth-whitening strips — for sale under various Walmart and Kroger brands — infringed on existing P&G patents related to its Crest Whitestrips brand.
P&G sought injunctive and monetary relief, according to a previous report by the Business Journal.
Although the specific terms of the settlement are confidential, Ranir said the agreement resolves “all known patent disputes between P&G and Ranir in the U.S. and in Canada regarding tooth-whitening strip products.”
Ranir agreed to certain confidential commercial terms in exchange for rights to P&G patents that allow Ranir to “remain in the tooth-whitening strip market.”
“P&G and Ranir have worked together to negotiate a mutually agreeable resolution to the underlying dispute, as well as new disputes related to P&G’s significant patent portfolio that includes broad patent coverage of tooth-whitening strips for years to come,” Ranir said.
P&G described the outcome as “successful.”
“This resolution is yet another instance of P&G’s successful enforcement of the intellectual property that protects its trusted Crest Whitestrips brand,” P&G said. “P&G will continue to protect and enforce its intellectual property.”
Founded in 1979, Ranir is a global manufacturer of private-label and branded consumer oral care products, including power and manual toothbrushes, teeth whiteners, dental floss and flossers.
