An award-winning downtown restaurant has closed.

IRON, at 25 Ottawa Ave. SW in Grand Rapids, served its last meal on Saturday.

The establishment embraced "Midwestern food, culture and hospitality," according to its website.

The restaurant that opened in 2016 was a two-time recipient of Grand Rapids Magazine’s annual Dining Awards, first receiving the Best New Restaurant designation in 2017, then a Top 10 award this year.

Owner-chef Chris Perkey, who also owns the downtown Italian restaurant Osteria Rossa, says in a Facebook post shared on Friday the closure was unexpected.

“It is with a very heavy heart that (due) to circumstances beyond our control, IRON will serve its last meal tomorrow night,” he says. “It has been a great two award-winning years. We’ve made lots of new friends and put out a lot of great food.

“Thanks to my staff both past and present. I look forward to seeing everyone at Osteria Rossa in the future.”

Perkey did not immediately respond to calls for comment.
