Medical practice hires orthopedic surgeon
A local medical practice has added an orthopedic surgeon to its team to expand its services.
Foot & Ankle Specialists of West Michigan said last week it hired Dr. Katherine Sage for the role.
Sage will serve in two of the practice’s six locations: Grand Rapids Northwest, at 1195 Wilson Ave. NW; and Grand Rapids Southeast, at 2144 E. Paris Ave. SE.
The addition of an orthopedic surgeon allows the podiatry practice to treat ailments with root causes that extend beyond the foot and ankle.
“It is common to have patients come to us for a foot or ankle condition only to learn that the source issue is actually derived from above the ankle,” said Dr. Michael David, partner, Foot & Ankle Specialists of West Michigan. “The addition of Dr. Sage allows us to serve these patients, providing greater continuity of care.”
After graduating from DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, Sage completed her orthopedic surgery residency at Metro Health Hospital in Wyoming. Following her residency, she moved to Baltimore for a fellowship in foot and ankle orthopedic surgery at Medstar Union Memorial Hospital.
While Sage’s training allows her to treat all aspects of the body, her practice will primarily focus on treating conditions related to foot and ankle issues.
As a Grand Rapids native, Sage has returned to the community where her parents served as medical professionals.
“My parents are my inspiration for becoming a surgeon,” Sage said. “My father served as a physician and my mother a nurse for more 30 years in the Grand Rapids community.”
Sage volunteers as the on-site physician for multiple Grand Rapids area sporting events, including the Fifth Third River Bank Run, Michigan Titanium Ironman and high school events.
Founded in 1999, Foot & Ankle Specialists of West Michigan employs nine foot and ankle physicians that care for patients with foot and ankle ailments, such as arthritis, hammertoes, calluses, bunions, trauma injuries and heel pain.
