Jim Gill, president and CEO of Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority, was elected to the board of directors for Airports Council International – North America, the trade association representing airports in the United States and Canada. ACI-NA advocates policies and provides services that strengthen the airports’ ability to serve its passengers, customers and communities. Gill is responsible for directing the day-to-day operations of the Gerald Ford Airport. He previously was COO and CFO for the Allegheny County Airport Authority in Pittsburgh.

ARCHITECTURE & ENGINEERING

Grand Rapids-based Concept Design Group and Ghafari Associates, a full-service engineering, architecture, process design, consulting and construction services firm with 15 offices worldwide, announced the merger of the two firms. The merger will expand Ghafari’s Western Michigan presence, broaden Concept Design’s reach to international markets and provide enhanced services and resources to the clients of both firms.

Progressive AE welcomed new board member, Dr. Cheryl Richards, CEO and regional dean of Northeastern University’s Charlotte Campus, to serve a three-year term.

AWARDS

Ann Arbor-based Hospice of Michigan was recognized for providing exemplary care to patients and families across northern and northwest Michigan through a Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey. HOM teams in Alpena and Gaylord earned Hospice Honors Elite status, while HOM teams serving Big Rapids, Cadillac, Ludington and Traverse City earned Hospice Honors designation.

EDUCATION

The Association for Corporate Growth Western Michigan announced the Grand Valley State University team is the winner of its annual intercollegiate competition, the ACG Cup. GVSU won in the MBA category, with prize money of $6,000. The team consisted of Sten Barbour; Beniah Dickson; and Pushpaja Dodla.

Grand Rapids Community College president Bill Pink was elected to the Higher Learning Commission board of trustees, which oversees accreditation for degree-granting colleges and universities in 19 states. Pink’s term runs from Sept. 2018 to Aug. 2022.

Grand Rapids Community College students saved more than $2 million in textbook costs this past academic year through a partnership with OpenStax, Rice University's open educational resources program that provides free, high-quality peer-reviewed textbooks. 

Grand Valley State University’s Enterprise Resource Planning Program in the Seidman College of Business was designated by SAP as a Next-Gen Chapter for its expertise and contributions in digital enterprise.

Western Michigan University Cooley Law School was honored at the recent National Press Club in Washington, D.C. when the Center for Plain Language awarded the school its ClearMark Award in the Legal category. The recognition was for the school’s restyled bylaws, which were recently redrafted by emeritus professor Joseph Kimble and Research & Writing Department chair Mark Cooney.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

New Holland Brewing Co. released is summer seasonal Lost Dune Blueberry Ale on draft and for the first time in cans. The cans feature artwork that connects the brew to summertime in Michigan, with rolling lakeshore dunes and Michigan blueberries.

GOVERNMENT

Christi Allen, D-Manlius Township, is running for District 1 Allegan County Commissioner. She will square off in the November election against the GOP primary winner. District 1 covers the cities of Fennville, Saugatuck and Douglas, and Manlius, Laketown and Saugatuck townships.

GRANTS

The Downtown Holland Principal Shopping District is the recipient of a $4,000 grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs through the Holland Area Arts Council to support the 2018 Street Performer Series.

The West Michigan Center for Arts and Technology received a $30,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for its tuition-free, nationally recognized Teen Arts and Tech program.

HEALTH

Debra Peters of Grand Rapids was elected president of the 5,800-member Okemos-based Michigan Dental Association. Also elected: Margaret Gingrich, of Big Rapids, president-elect; Todd Christy, of Berrien Springs, speaker of the MDA House of Delegates; Dr. Steven Conlon, of Grand Rapids, re-elected MDA editor. Van Andel Research Institute announced the recruitment of scientists Xiaobing Shi and Hong Wen to its Center for Epigenetics (the study of biological mechanisms that will switch genes on and off) to broaden the institute’s efforts to develop strategies that better predict, prevent, diagnose and develop more effective treatments for cancer.

TECHNOLOGY

Radley Corp. announced plans to diversify its productivity and automation platform by developing a standard integration to Cityworks utilities management software.

X-Rite Inc. and Pantone LLC announced their cloud-based digital color standard ecosystem, PantoneLIVE, will include the official spectral data from the Pantone Fashion, Home + Interiors System for cotton and nylon and the Pantone Matching System for plastics and coatings. For the first time, color specifiers and manufacturers will have instant access to up-to-date spectral values for Pantone Colors for plastics, coatings and textiles, including the Pantone Color of the Year 2018: PANTONE 18-3838, Ultra Violet. They also launched new color management innovations designed to improve the efficiency of plastics manufacturing to help virtually design, specify, communicate, formulate and control color quality across the entire plastics workflow to help speed production and reduce waste.
