Automation supplier expanding in South Carolina
A West Michigan company that makes automated machinery is planning a $2.2-million expansion in South Carolina.
Holland-based Koops plans to move its 15,000-square-foot production operation in Greenville, South Carolina to a 45,000-square-foot building in nearby Mauldin, South Carolina.
The current facility is at 17 AD Ashbury Rd. in Greenville, and the new space is at 25 Brookfield Oaks Dr. in Mauldin.
The investment is projected to create 20 jobs over the next five years, according to the South Carolina Department of Commerce.
Paul Brinks, president and CEO of Koops, said the South Carolina plant had reached capacity.
“We have increased customer demand, and the team down in Greenville is doing a great job of servicing and supporting our customers down in that region, so we’re really excited about that effort down there,” Brinks said.
The expansion — which is expected to be completed in July — will include updated office space, additional conference rooms and more.
South Carolina’s Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job-development credits related to the project.
Growth in Holland
Koops also recently expanded its Holland facility, with a 40,000-square-foot addition that was completed just over a year ago.
The Business Journal reported in 2016 the cost of that project was $4.9 million, assisted by grants from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and West Michigan! Works and a property tax abatement from the City of Holland.
Brinks said he expects the company will be able to expand again soon in West Michigan and is “undergoing small upgrades” at its Holland campus.
“We are really excited about growth in the Holland area and really excited about growth in the Greenville area as well, as we continue to move forward in the automation sector,” Brinks said.
Founded in 1989, Koops is employee owned and makes factory automation systems for a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, medical and others.
The company has more than 170 employees in Holland, Greenville, South Carolina and Silao Guanajuato, Mexico.
