A "listening room" for live music is coming to downtown Grand Rapids.

The Studio C Listening Room will be part of the Studio Park project being built in the Heartside neighborhood, at 123 Ionia Ave. SW.

Studio Park is on pace to open in the fall of 2019.

The Listening Room will be an intimate 200-person space.

It will feature performances from local and national musicians and songwriters who typically travel through Detroit and Chicago.

“I learned a lot about ‘A World of Music’ while at WYCE, and I want to use that to showcase all different styles and genres, such as folk, jazz rock, bluegrass, spoken word and everything in between, at this brand new venue,” said Quinn Mathews, music manager, Studio C. “Everyone will have encounters with musicians that they love.”

Upwards of $1 million has been invested in the Studio C Listening Room project, according to Emily Loeks, director of community affairs for Studio C.

Studio C will be working with Grand Rapids-based LiveSpace and Kirkegaard Associates on the space and acoustical engineering for the Listening Room.

The Listening Room will be designed for musical performances, but may occasionally be used for other events.

“There isn’t anything like this in Grand Rapids, and there needs to be,” Mathews said. “We have a rich and growing music scene, and this is a part of the ecosystem that is currently missing.”

Studio Park will house the Studio C Listening Room and nine-screen Studio C movie theatre, as well as multiple restaurants, a four-star hotel, class A office space, 106 residential units, retail spaces, a 942-space parking ramp and a large piazza, which will be programmed year-round and serve as a central gathering spot.
