A health system has named a new statewide chief strategy officer.

Kelly Smith will work in the role for both Mercy Health, which serves West Michigan, and the Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, or SJMHS, which serves southeast Michigan. Both systems are part of Trinity Health, a nonprofit Catholic health system.

Smith most recently served as regional chief strategy officer for West Michigan.

As a member of the Michigan executive team, Smith will act as an expert resource and advisor to statewide leaders to strengthen and drive strategic and business competencies across the state.

Smith has worked in health care for 25 years, working in a number of fields: strategic plan development; service line leadership; clinical operations; facility and campus planning; practice management; community relations; program development; and hospital operations.

Smith’s health care career began at Oakwood Healthcare in 1994, where she served in a variety of roles: administrative intern; division president of Oakwood Heritage Hospital (now Beaumont Hospital Taylor); administrator of clinical services; corporate director of strategic planning; and director of the Women’s and Children’s Center of Excellence.

As president of Beaumont Hospital Dearborn, Smith oversaw strategy development, daily operations and finances at the 632-bed acute care hospital.

"The elevation of Kelly to this statewide role fulfills our strategic and operational objective on a broader and more effective scale," said Mary Boyd, chief integration officer, SJMHS and Mercy Health. "Her appointment represents an expansion of Kelly's previous responsibilities within Mercy Health in West Michigan to a statewide focus, all while keeping our management structure lean and responsive."

She has participated in the Leadership Detroit program, an initiative of the Detroit Regional Chamber for existing and emerging leaders, and is active in other professional and community organizations.

She holds a B.S. and a master’s degree in hospital administration from The Ohio State University.
