A senior living organization is planning an $8.5-million expansion in town.

Clark Retirement Community is “re-imagining” its Clark at Franklin campus in Grand Rapids, at 1551 Franklin St. SE.

The project will add 22 new independent living apartments totaling 31,000 square feet, as well as new amenities, including a larger social space and exercise facilities.

The 15-month construction cycle is slated to begin in late August and finish in fall 2019.

Brian Pangle, the CEO of Clark Retirement Community, said about 70 percent of the units have already been reserved.

The Franklin campus will also shift its in-house short-term rehabilitation services to other providers in the area to help meet the “ever-increasing demand” for independent living housing, Pangle said.

Pangle said it makes more sense to have short-term rehab patients work with providers in health systems.

He said all of the Franklin campus’ short-term rehab staff were offered positions in other departments on campus.

Firms on the expansion project include Holland-based Elzinga & Volkers for construction, Progressive AE for architecture and interior design and Huntington for financing.

The organization also worked with the real estate consulting firm Plante Moran Cresa and the Richmond, Virginia-based investment bank BB&T.
